art house
Avant-garde film venue
Art house describes films, theaters, or venues oriented toward artistic or experimental cinema rather than mainstream entertainment.
An art house film prioritizes creative vision over commercial appeal.
An art house theater screens independent, foreign, or classic films that wouldn't find audiences at multiplexes.
The term sometimes carries connotations of pretension or inaccessibility: too art house for general audiences.
