splinter party
Dissident political faction
A splinter party is a political faction that breaks away from a larger party, typically over ideological disagreements or internal conflicts.
The term suggests fragmentation—a piece splitting off from the whole: Disaffected progressives formed a splinter party after the convention.
Such parties rarely achieve the influence of their parent organizations.
