phoning

Making a call

Phoning is the present participle of phone—to call someone by telephone: I've been phoning all morning but no one answers.

The gerund names the activity itself: Phoning is more personal than texting.

To phone it in is to do something with minimal effort, as if participating remotely rather than showing up.
