excommunicating
Casting out religiously
Excommunicating is formally excluding someone from participation in a religious community, especially barring them from sacraments in the Catholic Church.
The church excommunicates members for serious offenses against doctrine or discipline.
By extension, excommunicating can mean cutting someone off from any group or community: After the scandal, colleagues began excommunicating him from professional circles.
