spiritual exile
Inner sacred displacement
Spiritual exile is the sense of being cut off from one's deepest beliefs, sacred community, or relationship with the divine.
Unlike physical exile from a homeland, this displacement is internal—a feeling that one no longer belongs in spaces that once held meaning: After the church rejected her, she lived in spiritual exile for years.
The term often describes those who have left or been pushed out of religious traditions while still longing for transcendence.
