epiphysis

Long bone's end

The epiphysis is the rounded end of a long bone, separated from the shaft by a layer of cartilage during growth.

In children, the epiphyseal plate (growth plate) allows bones to lengthen; once it fuses in adulthood, growth stops.

The term also refers to the pineal gland, a small structure in the brain.
