spongy bone
Latticed skeletal tissue
Spongy bone is the porous, honeycomb-like bone tissue found inside bones, particularly at the ends of long bones and in the interior of vertebrae.
Unlike the dense outer layer (compact bone), spongy bone contains open spaces filled with marrow.
Its lattice structure provides strength while reducing weight: The femur's spongy bone absorbs shock during walking.
