speed governor
Engine speed restrictor
A speed governor is a device that limits how fast a machine can operate, most commonly installed on vehicles to prevent them from exceeding a set speed.
Trucks, buses, and fleet vehicles often have governors for safety or regulatory compliance.
The term extends to any mechanism that caps output: The engine has a governor that kicks in at 65 mph.
Informally, removing or bypassing a governor is called "derestricting."
