endomembrane system
Organelle trafficking network
The endomembrane system is the network of membrane-bound compartments inside eukaryotic cells that work together to produce, modify, and transport proteins and lipids.
It includes the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and vesicles—all interconnected by membrane traffic.
The nuclear envelope is sometimes included.
The endomembrane system allows cells to compartmentalize chemical processes.
