empirical formula
Reduced atomic proportions
An empirical formula in chemistry shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound, rather than the actual number of atoms in a molecule.
Glucose has the molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₆ but the empirical formula CH₂O, indicating a 1:2:1 ratio of carbon to hydrogen to oxygen.
The empirical formula can be determined from percent composition data.
Empirical formulas are derived from experimental observation—hence "empirical"—rather than from molecular structure.
