Fischer projection

Flat sugar sketch

A Fischer projection is a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional organic molecule, especially sugars and amino acids.

Horizontal lines represent bonds projecting toward the viewer; vertical lines represent bonds projecting away.

The format allows chemists to depict stereochemistry—the spatial arrangement of atoms—on a flat page: Draw the Fischer projection of D-glucose.
