deconditioning

Losing trained responses

Deconditioning is the loss of physical fitness or physiological adaptation that occurs when training stops or activity decreases.

Athletes returning from injury experience deconditioning.

Astronauts decondition in zero gravity, losing bone density and muscle mass.

The term also applies to psychological unlearning—breaking a conditioned response: therapy to decondition fear responses.
