elms

Tall serrated-leaf trees

Elms are large deciduous trees with serrated leaves and a distinctive vase-shaped canopy.

Once common along American streets, most were devastated by Dutch elm disease in the mid-20th century.

The wood is tough and water-resistant, traditionally used for coffins, wheel hubs, and boat keels.

The old elm shaded the entire yard.
