electron shells
Energy level zones
Electron shells are the concentric regions around an atom's nucleus where electrons are found, each at a characteristic energy level.
The innermost shell fills first; outer shells hold more electrons.
Chemical behavior depends largely on electrons in the outermost shell: Noble gases have full outer shells, making them unreactive.
Also called energy levels or electron orbits.
