thermopile

Stacked junction array

A thermopile is a device that converts thermal energy into electrical energy, consisting of multiple thermocouples connected in series.

The junctions are arranged so that temperature differences between them generate a measurable voltage.

Thermopiles appear in heat-sensing instruments, infrared detectors, and non-contact thermometers: The infrared thermometer uses a thermopile to measure skin temperature without touching it.
