ear trumpets

Old hearing aids

Ear trumpets are funnel-shaped devices that were held to the ear to amplify sound, used before electronic hearing aids.

The wide end collected sound waves and channeled them through a narrowing tube into the ear canal: My great-grandmother relied on an ear trumpet at family gatherings.

Now largely obsolete, they appear mainly in period films and antique shops.
