duckweeds
Tiny floating plants
Duckweeds are tiny floating plants that form green mats on still water.
The smallest flowering plants known, they consist of simple leaf-like fronds with or without roots dangling below.
Ducks and other waterfowl eat them, hence the name.
Rapid reproduction can cover a pond's surface completely: The pond was choked with duckweed.
