drywall anchor
Hollow wall grip
A drywall anchor is a fastener that allows screws to grip securely in drywall, which is too soft and crumbly to hold screws on its own.
Various designs exist—plastic expansion anchors, toggle bolts, self-drilling anchors—but all work by spreading force across a larger area of the wallboard: Use a drywall anchor if you're hanging anything heavier than a picture frame.
