dripstone

Mineral deposit overhead

Dripstone is rock formed by dripping water in caves—stalactites hanging from above, stalagmites rising from below.

The mineral-laden water deposits calcium carbonate drop by drop over thousands of years.

In architecture, dripstone is a projecting molding over a door or window that deflects rainwater, also called a hood mold.
