discotheque

Loud music hall

A discotheque is a nightclub where people dance to recorded music rather than live bands.

The word, borrowed from French in the 1960s, has largely given way to its shortened form disco, though discotheque retains a retro or European flavor: The old discotheque had a mirrored ball and flashing lights.
