Village People
Costumed disco ensemble
Village People is an American disco group formed in the late 1970s, known for theatrical costumes representing masculine American archetypes—a cowboy, a construction worker, a cop, a Native American chief, a soldier, and a leatherman.
Their songs "Y.M.C.A." and "Macho Man" became disco anthems.
The group was created with gay audiences in mind, and their campy aesthetic and double-entendre lyrics made them icons of gay culture, though they achieved mainstream success with audiences largely unaware of the subtext.
