discotheques

Clubs with DJs

Discotheques are nightclubs where people dance to recorded music, typically with a DJ selecting and mixing tracks.

The word is French, literally "record library," and was borrowed into English in the 1960s.

The shortened form disco largely replaced it, especially during the disco era of the 1970s.

Discotheque now sounds dated or deliberately retro: The hotel advertised a discotheque in the basement.
