discothèque

Groovy dance hall

A discothèque is a nightclub where people dance to recorded music rather than live bands.

The word arrived from French in the 1960s and was quickly shortened to disco, which dominated by the 1970s: Saturday Night Fever captured the disco era.

The full form discothèque now sounds dated or deliberately retro.
