discothèques

Places for dancing

Discothèques is the plural of discothèque, a nightclub where people dance to recorded music rather than live bands.

The word is French, literally "record library," and was shortened to disco in English during the 1970s dance music craze.

The full form now sounds dated or deliberately fancy: The city's discothèques were packed on Saturday nights.
