dipnetting

Handheld fish catching

Dipnetting is fishing with a dipnet—a bag-shaped net attached to a handle, lowered into the water and lifted to catch fish.

The method is traditional among indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, who use dipnets from platforms over rivers during salmon runs: We spent the morning dipnetting for sockeye.

The term also applies to recreational and commercial harvesting of other species.
