longlining

Baited hooks trailing

Longlining is a commercial fishing method using a main line, sometimes miles long, with thousands of baited hooks attached at intervals.

The technique catches tuna, swordfish, and other large fish efficiently but draws criticism for bycatch—unintended capture of sea turtles, sharks, and seabirds.

The fleet switched to longlining after quotas tightened on net fishing.
