digitalis

Cardiac glycoside source

Digitalis is a plant genus commonly called foxglove, with tall spikes of tubular flowers.

More often, the word refers to a drug derived from foxglove leaves, used to treat heart conditions by strengthening and regulating heartbeat.

Once a mainstay cardiac medication, digitalis has been largely replaced by synthetic alternatives but remains in use: The doctor prescribed digitalis for her heart failure.
