loading dose
First heavy administration
A loading dose is an initial high dose of a medication given to quickly establish therapeutic levels in the body, followed by smaller maintenance doses.
The approach is used when a drug takes time to accumulate: The doctor ordered a loading dose of the antibiotic before switching to regular doses.
Common with drugs that have long half-lives or when rapid effect is needed.
