digesters

Waste decomposition vessels

Digesters are tanks or vessels in which materials are broken down through chemical, biological, or thermal processes.

In wastewater treatment, anaerobic digesters use bacteria to decompose sewage sludge: The digesters produce methane that powers the treatment plant.

In papermaking, digesters break down wood chips into pulp using heat and chemicals.

The term also applies to people or things that digest—someone who absorbs information or a publication that condenses material into shorter form.
