white liquor
Alkaline cooking solution
White liquor is the alkaline solution used in papermaking to break down wood chips into pulp.
It consists mainly of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, the active chemicals in the kraft pulping process.
After use, the spent liquid becomes black liquor, which is processed and regenerated back into white liquor.
The mill recycles its white liquor to reduce chemical costs.
