derivations

Tracing linguistic roots

Derivations is the plural of derivation, which names something that comes from a source.

In grammar and linguistics, a derivation is a word formed from another: "happiness" derives from "happy," "unhappy" is another derivation.

In mathematics, derivation refers to the process of obtaining a derivative or working through logical steps to reach a conclusion.

More generally, any derivation traces something back to its origin: the derivation of the custom, a derivation of an earlier theory.
