affixes
Prefix and suffix
Affixes are word elements attached to a root to modify meaning or grammatical function.
Prefixes attach at the beginning (un-, pre-, anti-), suffixes at the end (-ness, -ing, -able).
English relies heavily on affixation for forming new words: unhappiness combines a prefix, root, and suffix.
The verb affix means to attach or fasten something to a surface.
