degree of freedom

Independent variation axis

A degree of freedom is an independent way something can move or vary.

In physics, a particle in three-dimensional space has three degrees of freedom—it can move along the x, y, or z axis.

In statistics, degrees of freedom describe how many values in a calculation are free to vary once constraints are applied.

The concept extends to any system where you're counting independent parameters: The robot arm has six degrees of freedom.

More degrees of freedom generally means more flexibility or complexity.
