Pavlovian conditioning

Learned automatic responses

Pavlovian conditioning is a learning process where a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a natural response through repeated pairing.

Named for Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, who famously trained dogs to salivate at a bell by ringing it before feeding them.

The term extends to any automatic response triggered by association: The smell of sunscreen is Pavlovian conditioning—it immediately makes me think of summer.
