aversion therapy
Disgust-based behavioral modification
Aversion therapy is a psychological treatment that pairs an unwanted behavior with an unpleasant stimulus, aiming to create a negative association that discourages the behavior.
Historically used to treat alcoholism, smoking, and—controversially—homosexuality, it might involve inducing nausea while drinking or administering electric shocks during unwanted arousal.
The approach has largely fallen out of favor due to ethical concerns and limited long-term effectiveness.
