decimal point

Divides whole, fractional

A decimal point is the dot separating the whole-number part of a number from its fractional part: 3.14, 0.005.

In American notation, it sits on the baseline; many other countries use a comma instead.

The term also appears figuratively for precision: accurate to three decimal points.
