death duty

Estate transfer levy

Death duty is a tax levied on the estate of someone who has died, based on the value of property and assets transferred to heirs.

The term is chiefly British and somewhat dated; inheritance tax and estate tax are now more common.

The plural death duties appears frequently: The family sold the manor house to pay death duties.
