deadly sin
Soul-damning offense
A deadly sin is one of seven vices in Christian tradition—pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth—considered fundamental to all other sins and spiritually fatal if unrepented.
Also called capital sins or cardinal sins.
The term extends figuratively to any serious transgression: In academia, plagiarism is the deadly sin.
