deadbolting

Engaging the bolt

Deadbolting is securing a door with a deadbolt—a lock mechanism that extends a solid metal bolt into the door frame, requiring a key or thumb turn rather than a spring mechanism.

Unlike spring latches, deadbolts resist forced entry because they can't be pushed back: She's paranoid about deadbolting every door before bed.

The term sometimes extends figuratively to any act of firmly securing something.
