dauphin

French crown prince

Dauphin was the title given to the heir apparent to the French throne from the 14th century until the monarchy's fall.

The word originally meant dolphin—the heraldic symbol of the province whose lords first bore the title.

The young dauphin never lived to become king.

In English, dauphin sometimes appears figuratively for any designated successor or crown prince of an organization.
