crinolines

Stiff Victorian undergarments

Crinolines are stiff petticoats or hooped frameworks worn under skirts to make them stand out from the body.

The term originally referred to a stiff fabric woven with horsehair, later to the cage-like structures of steel hoops that created the dramatic bell-shaped silhouettes of mid-19th-century fashion: Her crinoline was so wide she could barely fit through the doorway.
