counterinsurgencies
Fighting internal uprisings
Counterinsurgencies are military or political campaigns against insurgent forces—rebels fighting to overthrow or destabilize a government.
The term gained prominence during Cold War conflicts and later in Iraq and Afghanistan, where conventional armies struggled against guerrilla tactics.
Counterinsurgency doctrine emphasizes winning civilian support alongside military operations: The counterinsurgencies in Southeast Asia shaped a generation of military thinking.
