conventional wars
Armies facing armies
Conventional wars are armed conflicts fought between nations or organized military forces using standard weapons and tactics, as opposed to nuclear warfare, guerrilla insurgencies, or terrorism.
The term emerged during the Cold War to distinguish traditional battlefield combat from potential nuclear exchange: The generals planned for conventional war while hoping to avoid the nuclear option.
Most interstate conflicts since 1945 have been conventional wars.
