coronas

Rings around stars

Coronas is the plural of corona, most commonly referring to the luminous plasma atmosphere surrounding the sun, visible during a total eclipse.

The word extends to any crown-like circle of light, such as the glow around a streetlight in fog.

Corona also names a viral genus—the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 has distinctive spike proteins forming a crown-like halo.

The coronas of distant stars reveal their composition.
