corncobs

Maize's central cores

Corncobs are the cylindrical cores of ears of corn, the tough woody part that remains after the kernels have been removed or eaten.

They have various practical uses: as fuel, as material for pipes (corncob pipes), as livestock feed, and historically as a rough substitute for toilet paper in outhouses.

We tossed the corncobs into the compost pile after the cookout.
