core-shell

Nucleus with coating

Core-shell describes a structure with an inner material (the core) surrounded by a different outer material (the shell).

The term appears most often in materials science and nanotechnology, where core-shell nanoparticles combine properties of both materials: core-shell quantum dots, a core-shell catalyst with a platinum shell.

The hyphenated form functions as an adjective.
