Janus

Roman threshold guardian

Janus is the Roman god of beginnings, endings, and transitions, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions—one toward the past, one toward the future.

January takes its name from him.

The adjective Janus-faced describes something with two contrasting aspects, often suggesting duplicity or deceit: a Janus-faced policy that promises reform while preserving the status quo.
