lattice mismatch
Substrate-layer spacing conflict
Lattice mismatch is the difference in atomic spacing between two crystalline materials joined at an interface.
When growing one crystal layer atop another, mismatched lattices create strain that can cause defects or cracks: The lattice mismatch between silicon and germanium limits device performance.
The term appears in semiconductor manufacturing, thin-film deposition, and materials science.

- dislocationForced out of position
- threadingPassing strand through opening
- quantum dotsNanoscale semiconductors with size-dependent properties
- plastic deformationLasting material distortion under stress
