contact sport

Collision-based athletic competition

A contact sport is one where physical collision between players is expected and legal—football, hockey, rugby, boxing.

The term distinguishes these from non-contact sports like tennis or golf.

Some sports allow incidental contact without being classified as contact sports: Basketball is technically a contact sport, but not like football.
