consciousness raising
Sparking collective awareness
Consciousness raising is the process of increasing awareness about social or political issues, especially among people affected by them.
The term emerged from 1960s and 1970s feminism, where women gathered in small groups to share experiences and recognize personal problems as systemic: The consciousness-raising group met every Thursday.
Now applied broadly to any effort at collective awakening: environmental consciousness raising, consciousness raising about racial inequality.
